Our client, an unrepentant and avid collector of art, 50’s furniture and design, and a collector of artistic glassware, was always running out of space for his latest acquisitions. During the course of this renovation (the entire top floor of a small house in Centretown) a primary goal was to provide for this collection to be able to expand and in a way that the collection could be viewed as in a Gallery. The functions of the rooms of course still needed to address the rest of our client’s life including two guest rooms for visitors, a home office, a luxurious bath and a serene master bedroom.
The bath started with existing cabinets and countertops and built from there. A claustrophobic one-piece tub/shower was removed for a beautiful transparent installation with custom glass and marble to match the vanity and floor.
The guest room/office features built-in cabinetry, and a nifty fold down Murphy bed. Glazed doors and open shelves provide gallery space for the collector. A neat computer station allows for a tidy home office with cork walls.
The hallway was transfigured with a dramatic wrap-around gallery shelf that has lighted cubicles for further collections. Even the stairwell was treated as a gallery with lighted niches for the collections.
The master bedroom was itself treated as an artistic expression with all of the furniture custom made, including the bed. The wardrobe cabinets, night tables, and dresser were all made in matching maple finish with subtle stainless accents. The whole room results in a relaxing and rewarding work of art for the collector.
