The design for this family room is an extension of and in harmony with its shared kitchen. The cohesive design for both spaces as one were paramount, as they are completely interconnected.
To begin with the room had unchangeable architectural elements and our design needed to work within those constraints. The requirement of a large linear fireplace and a large TV were challenging as the only wall available was limited in length by stairs and a window. On top of that, a projection into the room for a fireplace or wall unit would make the furniture layout ‘pinched’. Our solution was to configure the service rooms behind (powder room and dog wash) to accommodate the fireplace. We simulated a wall unit by designing wall panelling with reveals. This was in harmony with the kitchen design and the finish of the panels matches flooring. This panelling continues at the ‘hall’ part of the room and is used to create an ultra-discreet walk-in pantry. The wall panelling continues as an architectural language throughout the house (flush door reveals, stair design).
The shared ceiling was dropped slightly at the exterior walls to accommodate drapes and to give the impression of a floating ceiling.
The completion of the ‘wall unit’ design used the same honed marble as the kitchen backsplash. It is installed in a unique mitered bevel to create a slight differential from the surround panels.
